RE: Digital Out???

Tim,

One thing you miss out is one of $KY's reasons that the subscriptions have increased....

"All the additional channels you now get"

In my case I still watch the same channels that I did when I had analogue, all the additional channels are either full of crap or just timeshifted versions of the existing channels. Mostly at terribly low bitrates that look awful and they do not fulfill the promised benefits of "a higher quality picture than analogue".

SKY also ramped up the subscriptions because they, like ITV digital paid out vast amounts of money for the rights to show Sports.

With the ability of the boxes to dial up and report where they are by Caller ID, SKY could if they wanted to, give people multiple cards for use in the same household for a nominal fee to cover admin costs, any receivers found not to be in the correct household can be disabled over the air. Did they choose to do this....NO - they charge you every month. Likewise with SKY+. It does give an added benefit that people will pay for, but why couldnt they have done it like TiVo, £10 per month or a one off lifetime sub.

Sky don’t make a huge amount of money out of flogging boxes, they are determined one way or another to increase each household’s monthly subscription spend. I’ve always taken the whole lot, and my subscription has increased from 26.99 in ’96 to 34.00 today.
