I would go with a combined modem/router such as the ASUS, connected to
a
linksys WAP11 or maybe one of the new 802.11a AP's such as the linksys
WAP54A or SMC 2755W, not sure if they are available outside USA yet
tho.

Wires only Des, and you assumed right. There's no need to keep it
separate,
but as wireless performance does vary from brand to brand, it seems
sensible
to use Linksys kit, as I know that will provide the right level of
coverage.
We did a fag packet calculation this afternoon, and reckon that to just
to
put a network socket in every room would involve running 1000m of CAT5 in
a
70 year old house - a massive undertaking - 802.11 isn't exactly
straightforward, but it is workable.

Are you getting a wires only adsl install, or getting a modem supplied?

If wires only, then you either need a separate modem and router, or a
combined modem/router. For combined, the ASUS AAM6000EV does the job for

For separate, you will need an ADSL modem with an ethernet connection and
an
ethernet router such as the linksys BEFSR41 or a USB ADSL modem and a
USB
router such as the DrayTek Vigor 2200USB.

I'm beginning to think that everyone hates me, 'cos no-one is responding

my Linksys questions. Maybe this one will get a better response J

There seem to be loads of ADSL routers that support PPPoE which seems to
be
the standard in the States. I haven't seen that many that support PPPoA
which is used over here. Anyone got any recommendations.

My plan for the time being is to use 802.11b As and when we need an
increase
in bandwidth I'll just swap out the access points for 802.11a (or
whatever)
so it seems sensible to keep the modem/router/dhcp server separate at
the
moment
