cheapo x-10 boiler control

Gents,

Mine is a tiny wee house, and to heat it I just switch the boiler on with
the built in timer and regulate temperature with the pot inside the boiler
(a Vaillant combi). I'd like to just be able to switch it on and off via
x-10.  I understand that all a stat does is close some 240v contacts across
a loop of wire which, there being no stat, is permanently closed right now.
Do I have to put some kind of x-10 relay in there, or can I just whack the
output of an AM12 into the return? (very naive when it comes to mains,
me...audio signals OTOH....)

Cheers for any clues...

Jerome
