I just got a digital I/O board from Weeder Technology, www.weedtech.com in the
states (4 days delivery by FedEx) which will decode a 4x4 keypad and squit the
data up RS232.  This leaves a couple of digital lines free to do other things
with.  Board comes with some simple basic (as in the language) examples on how
to set, read and write the ports.

I've found it very easy to use especially as you can chain the boards together.

Pete,

there are a number of things you could do... either a basic stam, or
PIC that sends data up the serial port when a button is pressed...
you wouldn't even have to write the software - look at
http://www.girder.nl

I've done a similar thing, and even with my limited understanding of
electronics managed it.. in fact the hardest part of it is
finding 'pretty' buttons..  - you could if you wanted use Qprox chips
(depends upon the level of electronics know-how in your office) to
create a panel of buttons, the actual sensors are behind the surface
so are not seen and you can create your own craphic overlay.. it
would also mean that the overlay could be changed as and when you
wanted - cheaply and effecively..
