Hi Des

What you need is the system I am in the middle of building. It will give
zoned input and output all down the serial port. It won't be connectable
directly to HV or similar though (I don't think). It is a work in progress
and time is the problem as always.

I ended up building this after trying to do collision detection with logic
chips and effectively doing what you suggest. I decided this was a quick way
to insanity!!
