RE: Re: Tivo

Brian,

Yes, you can, with one monkey.

All the TiVo dialup _actually_ does is dials into a Pipex POP on a dedicated (freephone) no. The TiVo _servers_ are all back in the States, so Pipex then uses the Internet to connect back to them. As such, it's fairly easy for a TiVo to talk to its servers on any old internet connection.

The monkey is that some transparent proxy servers seem to have trouble with the TiVo traffic... as such, it's worth checking whether any TurboNet users are succesfully using your ISP.

Regards,

Mark

Figures.....If I get one of these can I then use my network/cable modem?

I don't know about this group costing me a fortune, it is the learning
and the groups I have to join to get info! I had promised myself to get
out this summer! not a chance, looks like I will still be single for
another year.. :-))

Thanks Mark and Doogie.

No.

The network card is a custom one called TurboNet, available from
9thtee.com

Hi, if it can be fitted with a network card can it be connected to my
network and share the cable modem?

Is the nic a standard PCI jobbie?

Thanks,

B, almost a Tivo owner.

Yeah, EPG and software updates come down the phone line..... its a
dialup to a (IIRC) Pipex POP (freefone). To do it without a phoneline,
you either need a network card, like the TurboNet (I'm waiting on mine
just now from the bulk buy on ukha_turbonet..... not sure if Allan has
actually placed the order yet) from www.9thtee.com or a serial
connection to a PC with a PPP server set up.... you just need a Pronto
serial cable, but you need to put the Tivo drive into a PC to change
some values in config files to make it work.

If you had access to a phone line from time to time (work, relative,
neighbour?) then you *COULD* unplug the Tivo, connect it up there and
force a daily call, then take it back home afterwards..... .but you
obviously couldn't record while it was away from your Sky box etc.......

:S You can probably get away with doing that on the first couple of days

then once a week after that, but its not particularly convenient!

Doogie
