I haven't followed this thread really but there are 2 things I can
think of:
1. Rabbit Core module with ethernet iy solution -

2. An ethernet attached serial port ( out of the box solution -

I use the Rocket port serial hub, and it works flawlessly. Not only
that, but if you get the 8 port version you can actually split the
ports over a number of different machines eg add 2 to one machine 5
to another and 1 to a third...
I was going to do a review but never got round to it... will put it
on my todo list..
