I always use APC ones. You can get excellent value ones from http://serversource.co.uk/ss/sel.phtm which is mostly new but returned Dell stock. I had a 1400va unit for about £150 from them. Once you know the features you want it's just a case of balancing runtime against cost.

Thanks Ian, I'll check out the bios on the machine. Any recommendations for what sort of UPS.

Cheers,

My UPS (serial connection) is set to power down the server when the battery gets low. I have never had cause to try this next bit when connected to the UPS as it lasts nearly 3 hours but - the PC BIOS can be set to power up the PC on connection of the mains. I use this for X10 control of another PC as well. Remote on and off (off after shut down via remote control of course).

Having just built myself a server to sit in the garage and run homeseer, been away for a few days to find we've had a powercut and the machine was off, doh. I assume to shutdown properly when we get a powercut it's simply a case of a UPS. My question is what is the safest way to get the machine to restart when the power is resumed. I assume this would not be a feature of the UPS.

Thanks,

Keith
