RE: The Solution to Room Occupation Detection
I couldn't possibly comment, other than to say I did pick my words very
carefully ;-)

Tim you are a true HA junkie, I just love the ephasis on
'expensive-LOOKING' jewellery. In other words don't waste cash on SWMBO
when it could be better spent on HA gear!

mifare chips any one?
mifare chips from philips have successfully been incorporated into
watches.
if you are not into encoding data into the card, you can still use its
serial
number whic is guaranteed to be unique.
proximity cards are designed to work within a few inches from a reader.
partly due to
it being powered by rf energy from the reader. (works like a radio's
antennae) and partly by design
..imagine walking down the hallway and triggering doors to open as you
walk pass...

Mark,
My security pass for the office is like this. It only works within
half-an-inch or so of the detector, but I'm sure that's partly by
intent. I
guess it would be possible to use the same principle and have detector
in
ceilings or floors etc. As you suggest, you'd need to shrink the chip,
but
it's got promise. Maybe the sensors could be hidden in the door
surrounds
(like the anti-theft alarms in shops) to keep things tidy and the HA
controller keeps track of the movement in & out. Do you know anyone
with
retail outlet contacts ?? ;-)
Cheers,
Tim H.

Tim,
What a funky idea...
Not necessarily one of these chips, but some form of proximity chip
that
could go into a watch / necklace / etc.

Indeed :-)
Bringing the thread back on track a little, presumably one of these
devices
could be embedded into a watch / broch / necklace / ring / other
commonly
worn item ?
Hey, I've just thought, there's a great way to earn some brownie points
and
get SWMBO-compliance for occupancy detection: Obtain one of these
little
chips, have it embedded into a piece of expensive-looking jewellery and
give
to SWMBO as a gift for putting up with all of the HA toys. Bingo ?

Or, "don't worry dear, being a cyborg isn't really _that_ bad!",
yeah
right followed by the delicate sound of her hand impacting on my face,
or having no verbal communication until she chills out a bit...or all
of
the above!
