Paul, if you can surf the net, and have never set up Proxy Server, then

and do a port scan. it's possible you have more problems than an open
SMTP
relay.

The main thing you get from a proxy server, or NAT firewall, is IP
hiding:
an entire network can hide behind a single IP address, rather than every
PC
having to have a "real" internet address.

Proxy Servers are (IMO) a complete waste of time. NAT based firewalls
with
stateful inspection, such as Firewall-1 or the super cheep Winroute
provide
better access (almost 100% transparent to the user) without as many
overheads.

I can see the benefit from the caching perspective but am lost as to
it's benefit in the context of enabling browsing the web and using
Outlook etc, after all I can browse the web on my network now and I
don't have a proxy server running (Or do I??).

Is a proxy server necessary in order to use Exchange?

Or am I missing something?
