Now you have the raw DVD files, one method is to use FlaskMPEG (www.flaskmpeg.net), and use the inbuilt bbMPEG codec to convert to a suitable/smaller MPEG format (it has them all), or use the AVI output, and create an uncompressed or HUFFYUV encoded file - huffyuv is a lossless compression - another good tool is MPG2AVI (which I use) and can chuck out the huffyuv encoded AVI. Or leave it in the current MPEG2 format (and use a DVD player to open the IFO file to play).

Once you have an AVI (which by now will be very large - ie 60 gig), then use you can use DiVx 5 to encode. Bear in mind the paid pro version can do more (both I and P mpeg frames I believe). You cold use VirtualDUB to encode the raw AVI, and read the docs on how it works with 2-pass - threw me at first.

DiVx will give very good quality, and much less space (ie less than a gig per film). if you keep the AC3 sound, then you may double or triple that.

I've done pretty much all the permutations in an effort to bring in some old home videos, so if you've got any more q's , feel free.

Hi all,

I know that this has probably been answered before, but here's where I
am.

I have done a full (deCSSing) rip of a DVD to HDD. This DVD is Farscape
1.1, so contains two separate episodes. This has given me a whole bunch of
files:

6 BUPs
6 IFOs
13 VOBs


I would like to turn each of the two episodes into two things, so I can
compare quality / network requirements.

1: A single MPG file, giving no further losses

2: A DIVX-compressed file

What should I do next? What tools do I need?

I am NOT worried about cross-network navigation through the menus of DVDs
(though this would be nice if there's an easy way to do it.)

I DO have a requirement to be able to play the episodes individually, from
SOME kind of web-based menu. I'm going to be using www.videolan.org to do
this... but only got as far as client-side replay from a copied VOB file...
which means that the combining of VOBs is the next step.
