RE: OT: Memory and Windows XP

No direct experience of this (PC started with 768MB!) but ISTR a few years back comparisons were done of NT4 with different memory configurations & you did get gains up to 512Mb (though not as great going from 128->256 as from 256->512) but beyond that, gains were not worth the cost of memory and/or were negligible.

I suspect the same still holds true for XP workstation anyway, so certainly upgrade to 512!
Anyway, whatever MS 'recommend' you need to @ least double (recommend 128, so u r okay @ 256) just to get the OS performing well on it's own, then add any apps you want to run on top of that & you should deffo have > 256.
Besides - 100 quid for 256Mb?  A couple of years ago you'd pay that for _8_ mb!!!

I know from experience that upgrading from 128 to 256Mb makes a big difference to Windows XP performance (especially if you tweak the cache settings). Does anyone have personal experience (rather than anecdotal evidence) of going from 256 to 512?

Is it worth doing? The only reason I ask is that I run a high FSB on my system, and as a result the memory needed to do this (2700DDR RAM) comes in at just over a hundred quid a stick).

Tim
