Try out the small format ones before you buy, I had my heart set on a
vertical format Sony until I actually tried to use it and found the
ergonomics of it very poor for my sausage type fingers

I've been keeping an eye out for a new camcorder to replace my
very dead Sony Video 8 (must be at least 12 years old now).

good review of 95% in Sep 2001. This is a tradional shapped
camcorder rather than the vertical ones you tend to see a lot
of. You can get a lot smaller camcorders but normally as a
compromise to quality and features, It depends what your after.

You should be able to pick up one of these for around 1000ukp:-
