Good one Keith, I did not think anyone would reply so I plugged the
heat
lamp back in anyway.
If it is cold outside and the lamp blows the Meerkats cuddle each other
in the shed shivering, bless them....wont kill them but it is not comfy
for them.

I did not know you could safely use a lamp module with heat lamps, I
will do this as if this saves money for new lamps I will be a happy
little bunny.

I was originally going to install a backup lamp which will be switched
on if the temperature gets too low and the main lamp is on as this
would
indicate the main lamp has blown! but I generally think the cost of the
electricity leaving the lamp on is going to be less than switching the
lamp and blowing it. I have had many of these blow over the years!

Hi Brian,

There is NOTHING in an appliance module that could cause the lamps to
blow. The only thing in series with the live feed is a relay contact
which is exactly the same as a normal switch.

Have you checked the mains voltage in you area, if it is on the high
side it will drastically reduce the life of the bulbs. Also are the
bulbs 240V or 230V ?

I would suggest using a DIMMER module and running them at around
90-95%.
The loss of heat will be barely noticable but you should get a much
longer life from the lamps.

Many commercial buildings fit lamps of a higher wattage than needed
then
dim them down to the correct level. This prolongs the life dramaticaly
saving them a fortune on lamp replacement costs ( the biggest part of
which is the labour for relamping)

Too expensive to risk heat lamps to try it again, thought one of you
lecky boffins might be able to shed some "light" on it for

I use a 250w IR Heat lamp in my Meerkat shed, these never seem to last
long so I very rarely switch them off but now the summer threatens to
get here I plugged it into an appliance module, never switched it off
but connected anyway.

Now the lamp blew within a few weeks so I fitted another lamp and the
same thing happened.
Sometimes they do not last long but to have 2 blow in quick succession
is rare, does anyone know if it is the module causing this?

I am getting near to fitting this lamp to a DIN module but do not want
to blow anymore as they are expensive.

Note the heat lamp is plugged into an appliance module not a lamp
module.

Any suggestions?
