successfully ran 485 at 9600 bps on 10,000 feet of screened twisted pair
in an umbilical with 90Vdc on the power cores with only the occasional
lost packet (use a CRC based telemetry and you will be
ok)

Firstly what
is the maximum length for reliable 232 connections at 9600
baud
Is there a
cheap source of 482 PCI cards – in case 1 above is not
enough!
