Last time I saw a split unit in a
listed
building (not technically listed, but in a conservation area) the heat
exchanger was in the garden surrounded on all four sides by a hedge.

Bad move. The
loft
gets REALLY hot in the summer.
It would not be able to cool the heat
exchanger
when the air entering it is
hotter than the heat exchanger
itself.
Of course, if you want to use the Aircon to
heat
the house in the summer
then the loft is probably a good place
:-)
