You COULD put the heat exchanger in the loft if you could duct fresh
air
into the exchanger and exhaust the hot air via another vent. It should
be
quite easy to conceal those in the eaves somewhere but it may well be
less
efficient.

Bad move. The loft gets REALLY hot in the summer.
It would not be able to cool the heat exchanger when the air entering it
is
hotter than the heat exchanger itself.
Of course, if you want to use the Aircon to heat the house in the
summer
then the loft is probably a good place :-)
