There is no progress indicator of any sort: in fact, the office app looks
like it has crashed!

Ian,

Does that do what standard Norton AV does; it sits there requesting a
virus scan before opening the document? There is a progress bar shown in
Excel, I'm not sure about Word, that simply says "Requesting Virus Scan"
and that can take ages to complete, once loaded access the documents
seems fine.
