Presumably this only applies to Panasonic screens and even then not to their
screens sourced via official trade distributors?

Or are they all keeping the warranty they're able to offer secret?

All UK 'officially' sourced Plasma units carry a 12 month on site
warranty meaning not so much that they'll fix it but that they will bring a
replacement unit to you and take the defective unit away for repair. These
other solutions - RTB, wait for repair  or loan units through the reseller
imply a unit not sourced through Panasonic UK. Now I'm not knocking the
imports and most seem to come from Panasonic GMBH - I think the units are
identical and the resellers intentions good, particularly as stock is
limited but I wouldn't rely on a dealer to provide a loan unit - a service
contract company perhaps. It was suggested to me by one company that they
would  try and loan a Plasma (any model) but it could be a normal TV if
their loan unit was already allocated. When I asked if they only had one
loan unit they said yes and it was a small Daewoo screen.

Just for clarity the current Panasonics are all version P5 although there is
little difference from P4 (a slight brightness increase). Black units are
the commercial version (they were considerably cheaper than the silver
version in the P3 model and slightly cheaper in the P4 at the P5 level they
seem to be the same price). Commercial black units have BNC connectors
rather than phono but are I believe otherwise identical to the silver -
however I have been told they won't take the tuner board.

I now have a manual for the tuner board and also the tuner  - it was correct
when I said that you lose the use of the serial RS232 control once the tuner
is connected and you also lose the computer video connection even though the
connector remains there on the main plasma cell.

A lot of the plasma boxes are designed for only shipping once. They seem
to
do a good job, we've not yet had any damaged in transit, however once
you've
opened them they're not designed to be re-used and it's critical that they
remain vertical as well as protected.

Also shiping would also be a considerable cost.

I think I'd be inclined to pay a bit more and go for an on site warranty.

I'm really worried about a RTB warranty? This is BIG heavy item to ship
  back and forth?

  Many thanks

I couldn't wait at all and hired a van, drove to Chiswick (Krish AV) and
picked up my 50" Panasonic (series5). They did it for #6500 which wasn't
the cheapest (#6250 I seem to remember) but was #1000 cheaper than most
dealers. Only downside is it's a RTB warranty.

Have you tried TVF in Gerards Cross? They seemed to have most models in
  but they were quite expensive.

  Paul.

Hey getting the wife to agree to a plasma was the easy bit!

Trying to buy one is like a lottery! Prices vary massively. Stocks are
hit and miss. Stories over when stock is arriving is like folk law!

I want a Panasonic TH37PW56B, can I find one, NO. When are they
available, who know varies from one supplier to another! Some say next
week others say their not even released until 1st December!

The only other possible is the Toshiba WP27 which is identical to the
Panasonic 42PW4B but just re-badged but there warranty is 2 years RTB,
  which scares me a little.

  Whats better?

  1 year on-site warranty

  2 year RTB warranty.

  Yours impatient,

  Rob Mouser

P.S. SWMBO sais it HAS TO BE SILVER!!!
