  I think I will definitely use the RS valves, as you are right they
are much
  cheaper.

  For now I think I will investigate the appliance module route as I
have a
  couple of appliance modules spare, and don't fancy running yet more
cables
  from the PC !!!

  OK, firstly the valve you are looking at is quite expensive if
memory
  serves me correctly. If you are planning on more than one of these
the
  wallet could take a bashing. Add in an appliance module and power
supply
  for each and this just gets worse.

  As a suggestion: Why not use the valves mentioned by Steve and on my
web
  page (www.mollyology.com then projects then irrigation) from RS
components.
  These are low voltage and water mains rated. Something like 15 quid
will
  get the valve and copper unions for 1/2 inch pipe.

  All you have to do then is control them. For this you could go
the
  appliance module route and power supplies etc. or something hard
wired e.g.
  a relay board. Assuming you go for the relay board all you need to
do is
  control it from a PC. Something like the VIOM would suffice or I am
in the
  final stages of a xAP compatible serial controller for my boards
which
  would be a very cost effective way of doing what you have in
mind.

  If the bits that I make appeal drop me a mail off list as there is
stuff in
  the pipeline (ha ha) you would find interesting but is not quite
ready for
  general release yet.

  The plan is two fold.

  First to replace the timer system that we use on an outside tap
for
  watering
  the garden with something a little more dynamic - eg water at x time
for y
  minutes only if it has not rained today.  The valve would need
to cope with
  mains pressure for this.

  The second part is to control the zones in the watering system for
example
  -
  hanging basket zone need watering daily in the summer, but not at
all in
  the
  winter green house zone needs to be watered daily regardless.

  For the zone control the water pressure on the valve is
significantly
  reduced.

  Does anyone have any experience of the Toro Water Valve that Laser
are
  selling ?  It says that it takes 12v - 24v, would I be correct
in assuming
  that turning the power off closes the valve and turning the power on
turns
  the valve to open ?

  If so I presume an appliance module with adapter would allow me to
automate
  the valve ??  Does anyone know if this one can be attached
directly to the
  mains (unlike the 240v version letsautomate)
