All bridging the contacts is doing is imitating the reed switch. My
guess
is you have English weather in the works somewhere. There are reed
switches
for hostile environments as I have one monitoring my drains level in
case
of child induced toilet roll sewage disasters. Best thing is either
replace
it with another switch every time it dies or get an outside one.

Hi Ian,
Did that this morning - the powerflash with nothing connected seems
to do nothing (as expected). I'm going to leave it a while to double
check - should I bridge the contacts and try that as well? This is
the main thing that leads me to think the reed switch is at fault or
wrongly connected (if that is possible).
