In fact Mark, you need 5.
When I was younger, and a lot fitter, I sometimes used to jump about 1/2 way
down the stairs and then one more jump to the bottom - so I only touched one
of the middle steps.
The good news is that you are _fairly_ certain the person is travelling in a
downward direction if they only hit the middle step :-)

Now Pippa may not be able to even walk yet, but think of the future when she
will, and may attempt such a feat also.
Heck, she might even opt to slide down the bannister and bypass the step
sensors completely.

Forget the mats - put a beam break at the top and bottom of the stairwell
and one point skywards about 1/2 way up the bannsiter :-D
