Can someone explain ladder logic to me?

The alarm interface to Polaron lighting is programmed using
"ladder
logic", which I have just found out via Google is commonly used in
electronic circuit design. I think I'm being thick (it has been known
to
happen, frequently), would some kind soul be prepared to have a look at
the doc and then talk me through it?
