That's cos kit for in-car use is generally designed to work at 13.8V
(the nominal output of a car battery, which is usually quoted as a
round 12V).

Sources for a substitute for an in-car supply include: mains adapters
for in-car cool boxes, and model airplane/car suppliers. Tandy/Radio-
shack also do them, resplendent with a car cigarette lighter socker
on the front.
