Fully endorse what Tim said about BADA.

A standard part of the BADA promise is that you can buy the stuff, and bring it back for a full refund a week later on the basis that "I didn't like the sound of it in my house".

Obviously, if you do this more than once, you may not get them to sell you a third system :-)

You beat me to it Ken!

Architects always specify TVs in a corner as this tends to allow more people to crowd around the telly at sensible viewing angles. As a result the TV aerial and power sockets tend to be positioned accordingly. Compare this with my current place, where I decided where the plasma was going to be sited, then added a stud wall for the rear speakers, then designed the rest of the house around that!

If you want to get the best out of the system, put the telly in the middle of the short wall, then redesign your entire living area around it! And after what I’ve just read about the Bose system don’t bother! Even the cheaper Home Cinema amps have a “Bass management” function, which will route the bass to either the main speakers or an additional sub depending on “how low” the main speaker can go. Using a passive filter network won’t really do a dedicated 5.1 soundtrack justice.

Give yourself the opportunity to listen to a number of different systems, and also ask the dealer to demonstrate something a little more expensive. That way you’ll be able to tell if your ears can notice the difference. You WILL be blown away the first time you listen to a full HC set-up, so go to two or three dealers, and actually buy it from the dealer who you feel you can trust to help you reach an informed decision. Unfortunately buying off the page or web with HiFi is a false economy. As has been mentioned previously, you need to do the final audition in your own home, as the biggest variable is always the room the speakers are placed in – when I set mine up, I had to get my curtains re-made with interlining as the room was too “live”. You’ll have to pay close to list price (because you’re paying for the service) but ALWAYS buy from a BADA dealer - http://www.bada.co.uk I guarantee that it is worth the extra, as you won’t get lumbered with something that doesn’t work!

Tim.
