The
shield acts as a antenna, and when grounded induced current flows in the
shield
which in turn induced a equal and apposite current in the twisted pairs,
this is
not normally a problem because the twist cancels it out, however if there
is a
problem in the shield any ware along its length the problem will effect the
signal in the data pairs. if the wrong connector is used, then you will end
up
with a load of noise on the pairs as the shield is
broken.
STP
also has a higher attenuation at high frequencies and longitudinal
conversion
loss decreases the effects of the shield leading to
crosstalk
there
are other reasons which escape me with a hangover

I'd be interested to know in which aspects
STP/FTP doesn't perform as UTP?

Out of interest why are useing screened ? in several aspects it does
not perform as well as UTP
