Simple answer this time.  No.  Imagine the radio waves are torch
beams.  
Even though they cross in the middle, you can't see it from the ground.

You need a card with an external antenna connection or a soldering iron
;-)

You certainly do *not* want an amplifier, but you will need a pigtail to
connect the antenna if you're using Lucent-based cards.  This is just
a 
cable with an antenna connection at one end, and a connector for the card
at the other.  Nothing special, bar the outrageous pricing.
