Serial over Ethernet

In the context of running serial console for the firewall & home server
from
anywhere in the house ...

My colleague is searching for a solution that would enable him to run
RS-232
over UTP. Connection only goes through a dumb switch so only ethernet
support would be required; IP is optional (but quite acceptable). A pair of
cheap boxes providing RS-232 on one side and RJ jack on another would be
perfect.

Does anybody know of a not-reall-professional, under $300 solution (we
managed to find some equipement from KVM and similar in this price range)
for the problem?

(I suggested he simply runs a dedicated UTP bypass at the switch and
treating the line as an ordinary two-wire serial line, but he has three
switches in the house connected to three network cards in the server and
would like to attach the serial console (DEC VT-220, in fact) anywhere in
the house.)

Best regards,
Primoz
