I used five 50W 240v halogen downlighters in my 10'x8' bathroom (replacing
5
old fashioned 60w reflector spot lamps), and they give plenty of
illumination. I chose the 240v variety so I could dim them without
worrying
about transformers etc. All the ones I saw in the shops were 12v, so I
ended up ordering them from TLC.

There are a couple of things to watch out for with these lights. One is
that you need at least 6" of space above them, to allow for the heat
they
produce, so watch where the loft insulation is! The other is that the beam
is quite sharply defined, so you don't get any glow on the ceiling, and the
tops of the walls can also be quite dark (depending on positioning, of
course). The bulbs I use have a 38 degree beam - I certainly wouldn't go
any narrower.
