Why do you need an accelerated capture card for miniDV (firewire)?
What to accelerate?
[Paul] The accelerated bit I was referring to speeds up video processing,
s=
o
transitions and some effects render faster or in =91real time=92. Capture
i=
s not
faster (some very high end systems allow capture at x2 or x4 speed but
the<=
BR>
DV tape deck [normally DVCPRO or DVCAM] need to be compliant as well)
Anyway you cannot capture faster than the time needed to play the
tape...this is a camcorder limitation.
[Paul] of consumer cameras =96 yes.
.. but a faster system is useful for video-rendering, after the edit
phase.=
> You can buy a firewire card with hardware accelerated DV playback,
edi=
t
etc
What do you mean by hardware accelerated DV playback?
DV playback does not mean (from a regular user point of view) to output
bac=
k
the DV signal to a camcorder at the same speed as playback?
[Paul] Some cards have hardware based DV CODECs that supposedly improve
the=
quality of playback on the computer monitor (not output). Some of the
processing again is removed from the CPU. Even then as DV datarates are
so<=
BR>
high, you will get a lower quality =91preview=92 on your monitor but if
you=
view
it on a TV, you=92ll get top quality.
> Pinnacle are good (DV500 etc) but do cost a bit more.
For pure DV editing (with no need for analog input/output) you do the
same<=
BR>
with the cheapest available firewire card (here, in Romania is about
$30,
bundled with Media Studio SE).
[Paul] yes =96 but you=92ll get no real time capability (apart from
using
Premiere 6.5 which has some software real time capability now) and you
will=
wait considerably longer while effects and transitions render. If you
want<=
BR>
to edit on the cheap and don=92t mind waiting long times for your project
t=
o
render, a simple piece of software and cheap firewire card is great.
I=92ve=
used this =91in the field=92 on laptops etc when I=92ve had customers who
w=
ant to
get simple video out (such as conferences etc) but carting a (delicate)
and=
very expensive edit PC around doesn=92t make sense.
I still think that a simple Studio DV package (Card + Studio 8 software
+
Title Deko) can do the job, all for less than $100.
[Paul] really depends on whether you=92re going to do much editing or not =
=96 if
you do, you=92ll soon wish it was quicker ;)

""I see though that many of the cameras available in the UK do
no=
t
have a DV-in connection - does the lack of this mean that I can't
return the footage onto the camera once edited on a PC?""
To my knowledge the availability of DVin functionality is somewhat
limited in EUROPE not only UK due to import duty issues, a video
camera =3D one duty rate, a video camera + DV in =3D video recorder =3D
much higher duty.
Some camcorders can be hacked either in software or using third party
products which are rapidly disappearing from the market as
manufacturers slap them with injunctions, apparently the eurocrats
were getting annoyed that the OEM manufacturers weren't doing enough
to stop the DV in enabler market so threatened them with legal action
to recover the difference in duty.
search on the web for DVin enabler
Newer models are having DV in disabled in hardware so there will be
no room for playing.
When it comes to video editing I am still looking around but if you
want to do anything in real time you will need a high spec machine
and a dedicated editing software like Adobe Pinnacle (i think that is
the right name) and a supported Firewire card, i am considering the
Matrox RT.10 bundle at about =A3500
I found a magazine in my local smith's which seems good for
beginners, it's called Computer Video if my memory serves me
correctly.
I bought a Sony PC110 when it first came out and have been very
pleased with it for Video and pictures. I have however heard alot of
bad things about the very small Cannon cameras and the Mini MV Sony's
