Coincidently I've (in the last week) breadboarded together the IR
extender circuit described in

and I was pleasantly surprised with results ie it worked! Only issue
is that I need an IR photodiode with a daylight filter (otherwise it
is too sensitive to visible light)  so assuming the part arrives I'll =
swap it and see what happens.
Now this circuit is very simple - all it is really is an amplifier.
The down side is that the photodiode needs to be within a metre of
the remote control unit (handset), but the output worked across my
CAT5 network and has good range from the IR LED on the output (well
4metres at least). As its just an amplifier, nothing needs adjusting
so no "tuning" to 38kHz etc. Component cost c =A32.50.
I've also got the bits to build Nigel Orr's circuit to make a
comparison. I expect this to be less prone to noise and accept a
longer range on the input. My worry is that (if I understand the
circuit correctly) the signal is detected, demodulated, then
remodulated - and I wonder what really happens to the signal in
practice ie whether its prone to self induced positive feedback. Any
way we'll see.
Would like to hear what conclusions you draw from your project though.
