with my limited (VERY) understanding of perl I think I've established
that
your script is actually waiting for some data to be returned:

results in:

Getting album list...
192.168.72.202 12078 /query?source=
**sent request

so since it never gets to 

      print "after waiting for first
line\n";

something is wrong, If I use (http) 192.168.72.202 12078 /query?source=
in a browser i get the list returned....

any ideas?
