Stephen,

The diode helps prevent ringing - ie. signal reflections on larger
installations.
I put the diode in series with a 2 pin header so I can use a jumper to
select the diode if necessary.  Since the diodes cost only pennies I added
them on all my PCBs - 18 in total.
