I know a number of companies already do this.  See www.deltica.com and
sms2email.com for a start.  There's another I know of, but can't recall
the name right now.

I've set up a PCMCIA GSM card in a PC and it works surprisingly well.
It's not necessarily more expensive than a charge-per-message system,
though obviously more work to get up and running.  Other advantages are
that you can SMS messages back to the PC to make it do things and that
it can still SMS you if the network dies somewhere.
