Re: DVD backup software

Paul

I'm just putting the finishing touches to my system which is doing=20
exactly that. I've copied DVD's onto my Hard Drive and I'm playing=20
them over the network using 'ZoomPlayer' which in turn=20
uses 'PowerDVD' in the background. There are a number of advantages=20
to this, one of which is the amount of adjustability 'ZoomPlayer' has=20
with regards to sound set-up.

There are a number of packages out there that copy DVD's, many of=20
the 'off the shelf' tend to convent the DVD from the native .VOB=20
+ .IFO files into .Mpeg or .Avi files. In doing this you obviously=20
gain with the reduction of Hard Drive space needed but you loose the=20
all-important quality. The method I use to get the best of both=20
worlds is to use a programme called 'DVDShrink' (www.dvdshrink.org),=20
it allows you to interrogate the DVD and subtract the bits you don't=20
need i.e. - German commentary, Italian subtitles etc. and keep only=20
the main film (which suits me). DVDShrink has a number of settings=20
that allow you to compress the quality to save a greater amount of=20
HD space, but typically a film reduces from approx. 7.5Gb down to=20
5.5Gb

If you want to copy `All' the DVD (Extras etc) then on of the best=20
programmes is `DVDDecrypter' (www.dvddecrypter.com). It allows you to=20
copy, rip or even strip the DVD in a number of ways (simple files,=20
IFO or ISO).

One word of advice, if you are going to copy using the ISO method=20
(exact copy of the entire DVD in one file =96 the Hard Disk files size=20
will be anywhere from 4.0Gb to 8.5Gb, therefore it is important to=20
copy onto a Hard Drive formatted in NTFS NOT Fat32, as the latter=20
does not support file sizes over 4.0Gb.

There are a number of other programmes but I wanted a simple process=20
that did what I wanted without getting into serious code writing.

I hope this helps.

The stuff I've seen (Pinnacle) only allows you to copy non-
copyrighted discs!!! Obviously bugger all use to most people ;)

called DVDXCopy and find it great. You can't copy to HDD though and=20
if the original is a DV9 (dual layer), you have to obviously copy to=20
2 DVD-R/RW etc. They also do a prog that does compress to 1 DVD. This=20
is if you want to make a backup of a DVD though.
