The best way is to encode as MPEG-1 at pretty much any bit rate you
like. This guarantees compatibility cross-platform. PC wise, any Windows
machine with media player (any ver) installed will be able to play it.
Most CD-ROM productions that any media company (including mine) will use
MPEG-1 for compatibility.

However, it's not the best in terms of quality (far from it) - but any
other codec you use will normally have to be installed/downloaded.

Paul.

I've been asked to convert a 6 min VHS video (short promo) to an AVI
file so a friend can give copies to friends on a CD.

I can encode using FlaskMpeg but what is the best codec to use so that a
bog standard PC will be able to play back without downloading additional
codecs?

TIA

Don
