You could give it a try to enlarge the existing partition , or to
delete it and recreate a fresh one , by using Partition Magic
software. (install the 40 gb as a master on a different channel has
the most chance)
This has helped me a few times already when converting drives from
Ntfs/Linux to fat/fat32 etc.
I remember a similar symptom with a linux partition, I could not get
rid of it until killing it that way. After the old linux partition
was gone I could use any normal means to create partition sizes at
will.
if your drive is locked hardwarewise this won't help I guess.
