The PZM-11 uses 'phantom power' - 12-48V which is applied as -V and +V
over=
two lines plus a third ground line. This means that non-powered mics don't=
see the voltage and aren't damaged. A powered mic, however, looks for this=
voltage and by a clever simple bit of electronics can use it. You have to =
supply this phantom power to the mic from either a suitable mixer or you
ca=
n use a phantom power supply.

There is also a PZM-11LL which outputs line level audio and can operate
off=
of phantom power, 24V AC or 12-24V DC (which you'd have to supply to the m=
ic separately).

Like most professional mic's, these are designed to output a 'balanced'
aud=
io signal (two out of phase signal lines and ground). This means that
noise=
and interference is eliminated or kept to a minimum). By wiring them up in=
a certain way I have had some success in connecting directly to an 'unbala=
nced' soundcard mic input (as ALL consumer soundcards are). You can also
bu=
y a converter that converts balanced audio to unbalanced.

So, to connect one directly to a soundcard you'd need the mic, mic cable,
p=
hantom or DC power supply, extra cable (Cat5 possibly or just another bit
o=
f mic cable) for power, DC or Phantom power supply and a 3.5mm jack plug
wi=
red in the right way. I can't see why you couldn't use a standard 'wall
war=
t' type PSU (maybe some noise issues???).

been able to come by much on
this subject. What do you find you use the mics for?

I got mine a bit cheaper than that from a local professional audio
supplier. You could try having a
search, I think they're reasonably widely available but would normally
ship to order. I've not heard
of any other mic that's suitable so far (not many people use HA voice
recognition as it's still
limited technically). I also use a Shure automatic, intelligent mic
mixer (quite expensive though)
to feed 8 (from memory) sources into my HA server sound card. These mics
are very good - they're
designed to pickup voice frequencies and roll off lower frequency
interference such as HVAC.



The crown mics are a US design and so fit a standard US 'J' box (single
gang). These are pretty much
impossible to come by in the UK through normal 'Electrical Wholesalers'
etc but the likes of
LetsAutomate and certainly Laser do them. You could also screw them
directly to the wall given a
suitable size cutout for the box on the back of the plate.

Thanks Paul...I see LA sell the PZM11's for =A370+VAT. Are they worth the
money? Are there any other
UK distributors? What sort of back-box do they fit in to?
