The simplest way is with a kit - starter kit, starter kit gold etc.  To
do what you want to do, you might be able to get away with a very
inexpensive kit called a "Plug and Play" kit (aka LK15u).  Look
up the
specifications before you buy - the switch included (transceiver) will
only switch a 5A load.

Either stretch your arm at www.stretchingarms.com ;) or take a look into
the
following:

1 x TM13U-AH ALL HOUSE CODE X10 RF Radio Receiver and X10 Appliance
Module

1 x KR19E RF 6 Button Keyfob
http://www.letsautomate.com/10310.cfm

Put the TM13U where you cant reach, plug something in (up to 5amps), and
set
it to A on the dial. Then program up your KR19E remote (quick and easy
few
steps) and you're up and running turning that socket on/off.
