I think if you're going to install it yourself Cat5e is the best bet, your
more likely to get a reasonable install without the need for high end test
equipment, possibly shielded if you can see the need for any equipment that
can make use of it. Interference shouldn't be a problem as long as the
cables are at least 65mm away from 240v, if you need to cross mains ensure
its at 90 degrees.
Cat6 is a different ball game and you need to be aware of the bend radii of
the cable, such as deeper backboxes to ensure you don't 'squash' the cable.
Also, simply walking on the cable affects its characteristics. You should
avoid using cable ties as these tend to crush the cable etc...

We have finally moved in to our new house this weekend and I am
going to start cabling tomorrow.

I am going to be running an Ethernet backbone throughout the house,
with WiFi (802.11g) in the actual rooms), at probably 100 mbps but
with a view to the future (sharing multimedia around the house, real-
time game-playing, etc., etc., etc.) so I want the best bandwidth I
can get.

I am running 2 RJ45 sockets in each room down to a wiring frame in
the basement.  My question therefore is:

To Cat5e or to Cat6... that is the question.

Whether tis nobler to use shielded cable or unshielded cable when
running through walls which could be near electricity...
