Hi Mike,
The MCP2515 and MCP2510 are not standalone devices. They need a
microcontroller to control them via the SPI port on them.
For standalone you need the MCP2505X devices. These are programmed using
free software from Microchip and some home made hardware based on the
schematics in the dev kit for these devices. You could also purchase the
dev
kit but I think it is quite expensive.

can anyone tell me what hardware/software I need to program the Microchip
CAN 2510/2515 chips ? Is there a cheap alternative to Microchip's own
programmers ?
I have a cheap Dontronics programmer - I guess it is of no use.
