You didn't have a diskette in? Or tried to boot from a CD?

Is your disk FAT or NTFS?

You need, as a minimum, the files NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI on a
NT/W2K/XP formatted disk to start the boot process. BOOT.INI has the OS
selection menu and location of the rest of Windows.
