looking in the manual I've found a bit where you can either have the amp
select the digital signal over an analogue one if present or you can
manually specify digital (optical) or digital (coaxial) so I might just
use that for testing. I'll probably look at getting a proper cable as
well I think, knowing my luck something would break otherwise.

Electrical SPDIF is designed to use 75 ohm coax, but for short lengths
any reasonable screened cable short work.
>From the terminology I would imagine that both the optical and
electrical inputs got to the same input circuit, so it would be one or
the other - unless you have a high end amp that has assignable inputs.
