Having rolled out several thoused seats of X on windows using a
couple of different products back in the 90's :-) I can confirm
there are no easy ways to do it and have everything.

Thats the way to do it. telnet, or better still ssh and learn a few
commands. If you need more, use products with web interfaces. Very
good telnet or ssh client for windows is CRT or SecureCRT, from
www.vandyke.com. Not free, but cheap, and good. A windows explorer
type thing that knows how to do SSH for FTP is also very handy.
Either Windows Commander, or Secure FX from vandayke, so you can
throw files up and down.
X - just a pile of vulnerabilities and bandwidth hogs waiting to
happen.
