For now, I'm using Windows Media Player for playback, and yes the files do
play ok, but the reported information looks off.
Do VBR MP3s play ok on a chipped XBox ? A mate of mine says no, as it
didn't work for him. Any idea ?

Yup, that's what I'd deduced from the LAME docs. What is the
"%l--alt-preset 128%l" for in the first part of the LAME settings
(within EAC) for then ? I ran out of time last night so couldn't do a test
with it removed. The LAME docs suggest it sets the bit rate to 128 kbps,
whereas the "--preset insane" raises it to 320 kbps. This looks
to be conflicting :-S
