For your application you really want to be intrusive. There is a
gotcha, in that a failed neutral fault will mean there is no real
juice availabe, but a non-invasive voltage detector will think there
is.
What you really want is a "mains failure relay". Suitable babies
include the Broyce M1MFR (which I think is available from RS).
I dont know how your generator autostart thing works, but most
systems use some sort of an automatic transfer switch. Like the DSE
model 500 which provides all the necessary contro signals for start,
stop and status.
