Noisy Crystal XBOX!!??

SWMBO is leaving work soon as she is due to deliver our first child
towards the end of July.
She saw the Special Edition 'Crystal' XBOX on Amazon.co.uk and suggested
getting one "to keep her entertained before baby comes"!!
It was delivered Tuesday and after speaking to a friend who has a year
or two old black model, ours seems to have a noise his doesn't - it's
like there's a large fan running all the time - is this normal now?
Have Microsoft made their boxes noisier than my PC??
Or is it a fault and should I return it?
All help and advise will be appreciated and paid for in a pint of your
usual at UKHA 2004 (on the Saturday - lol)
