It's my understanding that the shavings and sawdust used for bedding in
the past in the UK was primarily Alder and Birch as these woods were
more commonly used in architecture - not a problem.

In the last ten years or so, pine is used for much more - so that's
what's available :

That being said, with the input from the list, I think I have found the
perfect solution - a combination of cardboard based bedding
("ecopetbed"

) and Carefresh...

Hi Ian,

I used to use sawdust with my gerbils when I was younger - I started
with 2 and ended up with 22!!!!!  Didn't have any problems as you have
had - maybe things have changed in the last 20 years?
