RE: RE: ADSL contention rates

OK, I got to ask.

I currently still use a (gasp..) dialup connection and since having the
opportunity to use broadband last week I have decided that I really ought
to
get it.

However, a bit of a dilemma ..*someone* (me) decided to move the bt master
socket from the hall-way into the lounge, and in doing so, my infinite
wisdom, I decided to only connect two of the wires up - it works just fine
for my phone (I have just the one).

What do you think would be the next step in getting broadband ? do I have
to
ring BT and ask them to do anything ? or can I just mail whichever ISP I
choose and ask them to do the business ...

I really don't know anything about getting broadband setup so any help
appreciated.

Jonathan.

For work, I looked at 20:1 512 vs. 50:1 1Mb and went with
the 1Mb service.
So far, I have yet to notice any "contention" so get pretty
much the full
1Mb connection ;)

Just tested at adslguide.org and got:

Direction	Actual Speed True Speed
(estimated)

Downstream	919 Kbps (114.9 KB/sec)	992 Kbps (inc.
overheads)
Upstream	236 Kbps (29.5 KB/sec)	254 Kbps (inc.
overheads)

Resending as the first message never got there....

+------------------------------

All

With all this talk of fast(er) broadband, I've been thinking
again about
upgrading my connection to the dizzy heights of 1Mb. What's
the consensus
on the best solution, assuming both are similarly priced - a
20:1 0.5Mb
connection, or a 50:1 1Mb connection? Most of my access is
during the day,
and I've never noticed any contention on my existing
connection. I also
live in a relatively small village, so if contention is
caused by local
users, I wouldn't expect that to be a huge problem round my
way....

Thanks
