I found the perfect plot, right location, right size, south facing, etc...
Then some git won 3 million on the lottery, and thought he was building
company, bought the plot and is now building THREE houses on it...

UK_Selfbuild is what you are looking for. Which is a yahoo group.

If you are serious ... get yourself down to WHSmith and buy a copy of
selfbuild and design.
